Duran Duran was without a doubt the 80's premiere boy band. As I reminisce and listen to my shuffle tracks I find myself replaying Duran Duran's more popular songs like The Reflex & Rio. Quick fact: Did you know their name was directly taken from a character in the 1968 Barbarella movie, Duran Duran? Yep go ahead and google it.
Back to the band though; they had the look, the hair (the hair was spectacular), the rags and most importantly the timing! They exploded on the scene when MTV was booming and big hair was 'in'. They were the pin-ups on every teen girl's wall. When once asked about their fans, bassist John Taylor said it was like "A wall of noise" that greeted them in concerts. Anyway they're my pick for throwback boy band of the day, enjoy!
I saw a biography of Motley Crue's 'The Dirt' about a week ago and was pleasantly surprised. They came up in the 80's during the hair revolution and honestly I thought it would be a half-baked glam shoot with random backstage footage of the group. Instead what I got was a full length biopic with actors and portrayals. I was a musician during that era and certainly no stranger to them. Heck I even had the Circus mags with all the glam pic centerfolds.
Anyway back to the movie. The first thing that caught my attention was Mick Mars comment about a debilitating disease he had, very powerful. He's always looked a little ghostly but I figured that was his gimmick. Then there was the much publicized car wreck with Vince and Razzle, Nikki's overdose and the passing of Vince's daughter. All equally moving. Getting back to the actors it speaks volumes that they remained constant. Tommy Lee comes off as a star struck kid, Vince an overzealous singer in a popular cover band and of course Nikki... the visionary. Because these actors stay throughout the movie you tend to form a bond and overlook their real-life counterparts. Yes there were a few cameos with the managers and agents but all in all, job well done. I won't give away the ending or details and the movie is currently on NetFlix. Do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Even if you aren't a Crue fan you're sure to find its an entertaining flick.
The stadium tour where to begin... Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett!? Well barring any mishaps, they are getting old, these hair gods should pull it off without a hitch. Sure Joan Jett has that sweet Monday Night Football deal and to be honest it sparked my interest. I googled her and found these guys were putting together a major tour. I grew up in this era of hair aficionados and have a place for them in my heart. Some may have come and gone, rest their sole, but all in all I cant wait to hear these guys again.
Ed Note: I saw 'The Dirt' on Netflix the other night, awesome movie!
